Nestled in the eastern hills of Nepal, Ilam is a paradise for tea lovers and nature enthusiasts. Recently, we had the privilege of visiting this scenic region, a place synonymous with Nepalese tea, and it was an experience that left an indelible mark on our heart. The journey to Ilam was as enchanting as the destination itself. Winding roads hugged verdant hills, and as we ascended, the air grew crisp and fragrant. Ilam greeted us with its signature charm—rolling hills carpeted with tea gardens, a serene atmosphere, and the warm smiles of the locals. Our visit centered around connecting with the heart of Ilam’s tea industry—the tea producers. Each producer we met had a unique story to tell, woven into the fabric of this region's rich tea heritage. From large-scale estates to small family-run farms, their passion for tea was palpable. They spoke of the meticulous process of cultivating tea, the challenges of maintaining quality, and their dreams of taking Nepalese tea to the world stage.

"Tea is more than just a drink; it serves many purposes," shared one of the tea producers. "It helps alleviate fatigue and offers refreshment and relaxation during stressful moments. Tea is deeply rooted in our culture, often shared with friends, neighbors, and guests as a symbol of hospitality and togetherness. People appreciate tea for its variety of textures and flavors, its unique aroma, and the comforting habit it has become for many."

We were introduced to the art of tea-making, from plucking the tender leaves to processing them into the aromatic cups we cherish. The producers were eager to share insights into the various types of tea they produce, including green, oolong, and the famed Ilam orthodox tea. No visit to Ilam would be complete without indulging in tea tasting. Each cup was a revelation, with flavors as diverse as the landscapes of Ilam. Sipping tea amidst the sprawling gardens, surrounded by the symphony of chirping birds and rustling leaves, was a moment of pure bliss. Ilam is more than just tea. It’s a place of cultural richness and natural beauty. We explored the local markets brimming with handcrafted goods, and enjoyed traditional delicacies.

During our visit to Ilam, we had insightful discussions with several tea producers, each sharing unique approaches to specialty tea production. Lalipma Specialty Tea, for instance, prides itself on its handmade techniques and cultural practices like worshipping the “mother bush,” reflecting a blend of tradition and innovation. Their personalized offerings, including Jhakri Gold and Oolong tea, cater to both local and international markets with a focus on organic cultivation. Similarly, Lamandala Specialty Tea emphasized its commitment to quality through rapid processing within hours of plucking and fostering strong relationships with local farmers to ensure a consistent supply of organic green tea leaves. Producers like Mai Pokhari Tea and Noorling Specialty Tea highlighted the significance of altitude, organic farming, and meticulous processing in crafting unique teas like Oolong and white teas.

Challenges such as contamination and inconsistent plucking techniques were prevalent, but opportunities for growth abound with rising international demand for organic teas and the potential for consumer education in Nepal. From innovative packaging strategies to empowering local farmers, these producers exemplify the potential of Nepalese tea to make a global impact while staying rooted in community and tradition. 

This visit to Ilam wasn’t just a journey through tea gardens; it was an exploration of resilience, tradition, and innovation. The tea producers are not just cultivating leaves; they are nurturing a legacy that has defined their identity and that of Nepal. Their stories inspired us to appreciate the humble cup of tea even more. As we left Ilam, we carried with us not just packets of tea but also memories of a place that feels like a slice of heaven on earth.
