The study assesses the expected changes in alcohol consumption during FY 2083/84 due to excise duty hikes, inflation caused by the Middle East conflict, increased DUI checks, a two-day government holiday, and government salary increases. It also examines overall consumption, switching behavior, and preferred drinking locations. A quantitative CAPI survey is conducted among 200 male alcohol consumers (21+ years) in Kathmandu Valley.

The findings show that alcohol consumption behavior in FY 2083/84 is largely shaped by a balance between economic pressures, habitual patterns, and lifestyle changes. While excise duty hikes (21%) and inflation driven by middle east conflict (36%) are expected to reduce consumption for respondents, a significant proportion anticipate no change due to habitual consumption pattern (77%) and routine stability (70%). Increased DUI checks have reinforced responsible drinking rather than drastically altering frequency. Additional leisure time from two-day weekends and higher income from salary increments are likely to increase the frequency of consumption. Overall consumption is expected to remain stable (41%) for most, mainly due to behavioral control & moderation (52%). Downgrading to cheaper alcohol is limited (59%), reflecting quality protection priority. Home is projected to remain the primary drinking location due to comfort and safety (55%). In summary, alcohol consumption in FY 2083/84 is expected to remain relatively steady, with nuanced shifts driven by affordability, regulation, and lifestyle factors rather than drastic behavioral change.

Overall, Alcohol consumption in FY 2083/84 is expected to remain largely stable despite economic and regulatory changes. Habitual consumption, quality preference, and home consumption continue to shape consumer behavior.
