This study explores the awareness, perception, and adoption potential of two-wheeler electric vehicles (EVs) among internal combustion engine (ICE) users in Nepal. It focuses on 433 respondents who have purchased an ICE two-wheeler within the past six months across Kathmandu, Janakpur, Butwal, and Biratnagar/Itahari.
Findings show that most respondents are aware of EVs, with higher awareness among older and male users. Many express intent to purchase an EV, mainly due to cost savings and environmental concerns. Friends and family are the primary sources of EV information. While EVs are generally seen as reliable and comfortable, actual hands-on experience is limited—few have taken a test ride, though interest in doing so is high.
Key barriers include limited charging infrastructure and concerns about long-distance travel. Pollution reduction emerges as a strong motivator for EV interest. While awareness is growing, deeper understanding and experience remain low. Expanding test ride opportunities, improving infrastructure, and targeted awareness efforts could significantly support EV adoption in Nepal.
