This study explores the awareness, understanding, and perceptions of climate change among residents of Bagmati Province, Nepal. This study is a structured survey among 433 participants from diverse backgrounds, the research provides valuable insights into how people in Nepal perceive the causes, impacts, and solutions related to climate change. By examining levels of climate change awareness and knowledge across different groups, the study highlights key areas for targeted communication and policy efforts.
Findings reveal that while general awareness is moderately high, the respondent’s links climate change to flooding, heatwaves, and rainfall changes, deeper understanding of greenhouse gases and mitigation strategies remains limited. Social media emerges as the dominant channel for climate-related information, followed by television and online platforms, underlining the importance of multi-channel communication strategies.
The study also highlights that the respondents consider both the government and individuals as equally responsible for addressing climate change. Deforestation, industrialization, and the use of fossil fuels are widely recognized as leading causes. As for solutions, afforestation, reducing fossil fuel use, and adopting the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle are strongly emphasized.
These insights offer important direction for environmental policymakers, educators, and communicators to build more targeted awareness campaigns and sustainable action plans in Nepal.
