Marketing Orientation in Small and Medium Manufacturing Firms

2025-04-22

This study examines the marketing orientation of 300 small and medium manufacturing enterprises (SMEs) in Kathmandu, Nepal. Covering sectors such as cement, textile, food and beverage and timber/wood. This study evaluates how SMEs approach market analysis, customer understanding, competition, and strategic planning. The goal is to understand how these firms assess customer insights, market conditions, and marketing performance, as well as how they handle segmentation, targeting, positioning, branding, communication, growth strategies, and operational execution.

Most SMEs actively analyze market size, share, and competition. However, fewer assess market growth trends, suggesting a gap in long-term strategic planning. Competitive awareness is particularly strong among aluminium and metal manufacturers. Many firms prioritize the marketing mix and engage in strategic planning—textile firms, for example, emphasize segmentation, while cement block firms focus on defining target markets. Positioning and brand differentiation are common strategies, especially in crowded sectors.

Growth strategies like product innovation and market expansion are widely adopted. A significant number of SMEs also invest in building brand awareness and shaping a positive brand image. Strategic communication is increasingly viewed not just as promotion, but as a tool for building trust, retaining customers, and strengthening brand equity.

Overall, SMEs in Nepal show a strong understanding of market dynamics and are committed to customer-focused, growth-oriented strategies. Their emphasis on marketing, innovation, and performance monitoring positions them well to respond to changing market conditions. These insights can inform policies and programs that support competitiveness and sustainable growth in Nepal’s SME sector.
